Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction has become an extremely popular way to remove unwanted fat from problem areas on the body. According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. This surgery works by removing fat from specific areas of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, legs, buttocks, arms, cheeks and neck.

If you are interested in liposuction procedures, start by carefully researching the surgery in order to determine if it is right for you. You should consider a number of factors, including the recovery time, costs and your own expectations. The following are just a few of the major factors you should discuss with your cosmetic surgeon.

Duration of the Procedure

The actual length of time that the procedure will take can vary considerably depending on the amount of fat being removed and the specific method that is being used. Some patients have the entire procedure completed in an hour or two, while others will need to undergo several hours of surgery in order to achieve the desired results.

Anesthesia

No matter what type of liposuction procedure is being performed, all patients receive some type of anesthesia. The actual type of anesthesia that is used will depend largely on the extent of the liposuction procedure. Some patients can remain awake during the surgery, but will receive a local anesthetic. Those undergoing a more complex liposuction procedure will need general anesthesia and will remain asleep throughout the procedure.

Liposuction Techniques

There are a number of different liposuction procedures in use today. Most of these techniques vary in terms of the amount of solution injected under the skin before the procedure and the use of additional devices to augment the surgery.

- Tumescent Technique: In this procedure, a large volume of dilute solution is injected before the fat is removed. This process causes the fatty tissues to become swollen and firm, making it easier for the surgeon to target and remove.

- Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL): This technique also utilizes a large volume of dilute solution as well as ultrasonic energy to heat the targeted fat.

- Power Assisted Techniques (PAL): This liposuction procedure relies on an attached cannula that moves rapidly to make it easier for the surgeon to remove the unwanted fatty tissue.

There are a number of alternatives to liposuction currently on the market, including lipodissolve, mesotherapy, and Thermage.
